Student Counselling
Welcome! I am glad you’re here! I assume you have found me through your college and would like to book an appointment. You’re in the right place and everything you need to know about the process is right here.
I have worked with international and local college students for over ten years and counting. Students have a drive and commitment to their future that continues to amaze me. I have been on both sides of student life and I know that life does not slow down or ease just because one is in school. This is why I am passionate about working with students and colleges to provide extra support when you may need it the most.
If you are a student at a college that has a contract with me, then your first six sessions are covered by your college. That means you won’t have to pay anything.
The Process
1
Book in a free, New Client Consultation. We will meet for 15 minutes and make sure we’re a good fit to work together. You can tell me a little bit about what brings you to counselling, and we can discuss ways I might be able to help.
2
After that first consultation, I will confirm with your school that you are a student that is currently enrolled there, and confirm they will pay for your counselling sessions. I can only do this for schools I have a contract with. If your school told you about me, then I likely have an agreement with them. If I do not have a contract with the school that you belong to, you can still book an appointment with me, but you would be booking as a private practice client and would be responsible for the full fee.
3
Once I have confirmed with your school, we are good to go! We can book your first appointment!
Some Notes About Confidentiality
- Everything we discuss will stay between us.
- When I am confirming your enrollment with a school I have a contract with, that will indicate to that school that you are seeking counselling with me.
- Your school will also be aware of the dates of your sessions that they are paying for.
- What we discuss in our sessions will not be shared with your school.
- There is more detail about this in the confidentiality section of the consent form, and we will discuss this in the New Client Consultation session.
Counselling Approach With Students
With students, I tend to use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. This is a goal-oriented approach to therapy. We will only have a limited number of sessions covered by your school, which means we want to be efficient. Also, you’re busy! You’re a college student! We are going to do our best to keep focused on what you need to get you to your goal of graduation.
Your reason for counselling does not have to be directly related to schoolwork. Life inside and outside of college has influence on your stress levels and can contribute to your success and struggles. Counselling is for you as a person, not just you as a student. Whatever you want to talk about, I’m here. When we use Solution-Focused Therapy, that might mean we’re focused on recognizing thought patterns, or practicing coping skills, or developing grounding skills, or maybe you just need some genuine empathy to help you move forward. I’m here to help you get through this.
If You’re an Administrator
I know smaller private colleges want to provide the same high quality and resources as larger institutions, while making the best use of your budget. I can help you set up a counselling plan that works for your school and provides you only the amount of counselling you need, at a price that makes sense.
There are many studies documenting the stress and mental health struggles of students. We all want our students to be successful, graduate, and have fulfilling careers. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy can provide students with skills to manage their stress while they make their way through their program. The goal is not just to get them through the moment, but rather to give them skills they can use to help them make it to the next stage of their life.
How Does the Counselling Program Work?
The process is kept as simple as possible for everyone. Once a college signs a contract, they will provide their students with my website. Students can book for the time that works best for them, and whether they want to be in-person or virtual. After a New Client Consultation, I will reach out to an established person on your administration team to confirm the student is actively enrolled with your institution. Students will receive a maximum of six sessions. Each month the college will receive an invoice with the dates and names of students that have received counselling in order to confirm billing. All other information regarding the student will be kept confidential.
If the number of students requesting counselling exceeds the number of counselling sessions available, students will be put on a waitlist. The number of students on the waitlist will be included on the invoice for informational purposes only.
